2022 Ford Bronco: Specs, Prices, Ratings, and Reviews (2024)

The 2022 Bronco SUV comes in six trim levels in either a two-door or four-door configuration: Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, Outer Banks, Badlands, and Wildtrak. Pricing starts at $30,795 including destination and climbs to $49,275 for the Wildtrak before options.

Separately, Ford also offers the Bronco Sport, a burly-looking small crossover that has more in common with the Escape than the larger Bronco.

The Bronco starts out with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and a V6 turbo is optional.

A seven-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.3-liter engine, and a 10-speed automatic is available for $1,595.

The V6 comes exclusively with the automatic. This combo is standard on the line-topping Wildtrak and costs $3,490 on the Base, Big Bend, Black Diamond, and Badlands. The V6 drops to $1,895 on the Outer Banks because the automatic is already standard.

The standard four-wheel-drive system features selectable engagement, a terrain selector, and a two-speed transfer case. The available Advanced 4x4 system also offers automatic engagement and additional terrain selections. This setup is standard on the Badlands and Wildtrak — and costs anywhere from $795 to $7,385 on the others depending on trim level and body style.

The two-door Bronco provides seating for four, while the longer four-door Bronco can seat up to five. The doors and roof are removable. A hardtop is standard on all versions except the Base four-door, where it costs $695.

Two-doors offer 22.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and 52.3 cubic feet with it folded. As expected, the four-door Bronco is far better at handling stuff. Buyers get 35.6 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat and 77.6 cubic feet with it down.

The Base model comes with automatic high beams and front collision mitigation with automatic braking and pedestrian detection.

The Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver assistance technology is part of the Mid Package ($1,495) for the Big Bend, Black Diamond, and Badlands. Co-Pilot360 includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. These features are standard on the Outer Banks and Wildtrak.

The High Package ($1,295) for the Outer Banks and Wildtrak ($1,295) includes surround-view cameras and front parking sensors. There's also a Lux Package ($3,590) for these trims with adaptive cruise control and evasive steering assist. The latter two items are also available on the Badlands in a Lux Package priced at $5,085.

The Bronco's standard infotainment system includes an eight-inch touchscreen, six speakers, four USB ports, satellite radio, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Navigation is included in the Mid Package on eligible trims — and comes standard on the Outer Banks and Wildtrak.

The High Package provides a 12-inch touchscreen, and the Lux Package adds a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and wireless device charging.

The Bronco starts off with basics like manual climate control, cruise control, push-button start, keyless entry, heated side mirrors, and cloth seats. The exterior receives tow hooks, bash plates, LED headlights, and 16-inch silver steel wheels with 30-inch all-season tires.

The Sasquatch Package ($4,995) enhances the Bronco's off-road prowess with electronically locking axles, a lifted suspension, and mud-terrain tires on 17-inch gloss black wheels.

The Wildtrak comes standard with the Badland's off-road hardware, augmented by 35-inch tires and the Sasquatch Package. Non-performance features and option packages are shared with the Outer Banks.

Compare Bronco Trims Side-By-Side

A world of choice. Choosing your Bronco is a confusing affair. As well as a choice of two or four doors, soft-top or hard-top configurations, Ford offers eight model grades with increasing off-road prowess, plus four packages covering the comfort and infotainment options. There are further choices between seven-speed manual and ten-speed automatic transmissions, 2.3-liter or 2.7-liter gas engines plus a three-liter V6 in high-end models, and over 200 separate accessories ranging from winches to seat covers.

Given this wealth of choice, it’s hard to draw conclusions on which model might suit you best. Prices also vary hugely, from $30,795 for the fittingly-titled Base two-door model up to almost $73,000 for a fully-specified Raptor with the three-liter engine and a few creature comforts. Whichever model you choose, you’ll get smartphone mirroring and keyless start, but the options list is required for a power driver’s seat or wireless device charging, even on flagship Raptor trim.

Built for the rough stuff… The Bronco might be bought by suburbanites hoping to impress their neighbors, but it’s not at home on the tarmac. Fuel economy is poor, the hard-top makes a hell of a racket, and the presence of six passive drain plugs within rubberized flooring indicates this isn’t a vehicle intended for freeway runs. As the recurring interior and exterior badging remind you, this is a Bronco, and it lives in the wild.

Three skid plates protect mechanical components from rocks, while a torque inhibitor simplifies sand crossing. All-wheel drive is standard alongside a two-speed transfer case, while options include ascent control, Bilstein shocks with three damping zones, and 35-inch all-terrain tires. This is a car capable of climbing 40-degree rock slopes, fording over 33 inches of water (hence the drain holes), and withstanding the sort of punishment that would make a Toyota Land Cruiser question its life choices.

…But is it comfortable? The ride is pretty good, thanks to the independent front suspension and coil-over rear shocks, while the Bronco’s considerable weight makes it feel stable thanks to predictably meaty steering and an ability to disregard crosswinds. The seats are small but well-bolstered, while adults will feel less squashed in the four-door version than the two-door. You might not appreciate the vinyl seating in Badlands trim, but at least it’s mildew-resistant.

As with the styling, the interior is very much an acquired taste. Everything is rubberized, from the switches and knobs to the gear levers and floor mats. That’s superb if you’re coming home from a forest with some freshly-cut logs in the back, but unnecessary for taking your kids to school. It’s all rather basic, and extensive noise penetration doesn’t help. Driving down the freeway with the hardtop rattling and all-terrain tires roaring is a punishing experience, whereas tackling a desert in a doorless soft-top is an experience only purpose-built off-roaders like the Jeep Wrangler could come close to matching.

Final thoughts. While most SUVs and off-roaders try to cushion their occupants from privation, the Bronco celebrates its crude-but-unburstable heritage. Where else in 2022 would you find mold-resistant vinyl seats or rubber flooring with drain plugs? How many cars come with carrying bags for their removable doors, or bumpers which can be swapped out for modular replacements?

Whether or not Ford’s take on the old Land Rover Defender appeals to you depends on how far into the sticks you live, and what your weekend hobbies involve. Few terrains will defeat the Bronco, but the noise and fuel economy are major concerns, and the confusing range might put off less committed consumers.
